What began as an international adventure turned into the opportunity of a lifetime. My first step as graduate took me to China where I began learning what it really takes to be a teacher. While I was born in raised in Eastern Canada, and am the product of the New Brunswick education system, when I moved to China I began teaching through inquiry and using the International Baccalaureate PYP framework.
As teachers, we also enjoy looking back at the growth all of our students have had. Getting to see a student pick up a chapter book for the first time, the smile kids get when they finally understand the concept of multiplication, and the cheering when students realize how much money they raised for their fundraiser are all beautiful moments that make teaching worth it.
Although I love all these "big moments", my love for teaching is rooted in the lesson planning. There is nothing that makes me feel like a more successful teacher than when students finishes a learning engagement with more wonders than they started with! Watching the "lightbulbs" go off as students come to new understanding and reach new conclusions about a concept is magical and makes me so proud to be a teacher. Like any teacher, no lesson ever goes "perfectly as planned", but I feel that there have been so many "perfect twists" in many learning engagements!
